Wheel Balancing Service Chardon, OH

Do My Tires Need to Be Aligned or Balanced?

Have you ever ridden in a car and the steering wheel seemed to have a life of its own? If you have, then you know that more than just the front end of your vehicle needs to be aligned. In fact, individual wheels need to be aligned and balanced as well.
With the rough road conditions throughout Northeast Ohio -- particularly in Lake and Geauga county -- your wheels might very well need to be balanced.
What’s the difference between an alignment and a balance? Alignment is making sure that multiple tires are working together. Balancing is making sure that the wheel and tire are running smoothly as a pair. At Chardon Square Auto & Tire, our expert auto repair technicians can make sure that your vehicle has well balanced wheels, saving you money on fuel and increasing your car’s performance.

About Wheel Balancing

Often confused with a wheel alignment, a properly balanced wheel is a perfectly tuned wheel-tire combination. This is accomplished by placing measured lead weights on the opposite side of the "heavy spot" - the noticeable tread wear on your unbalanced tire.

How do I know if I need to have my wheels balanced?

Is your vehicle vibrating at certain speeds, say, between 50 and 70 mph? If so, chances are that at least one wheel is out of balance. The reason you feel vibration is that one section of your tire is heavier than the other because it's endured more exposure to the friction and heat of the road. You may also see scalloped, erratic wear patterns on your tires and feel vibration in more than just your steering wheel, including your seat or floorboard.

Every time a wheel is first mounted onto the rim with a new tire, it has to be balanced. The goal is to make sure the weight is even around the wheel.

Wheel balance is checked on a wheel balancing machine that can sense as little as quarter ounce difference in weight around the wheel. Why worry about quarter ounce on a wheel? That tiny amount of weight travels hundreds of times a minute around the axle. It creates enough momentum to cause serious vibration. And when you multiply the effect by four wheels, the wobble really adds up.
To balance the tires, our Chardon Square Auto & Tire technicians place tiny offsetting weights at specific points around the wheel. In order to maintain the balance, it is important to have your tires balanced on a regular basis. Every bump, corner and pothole impacts tire balance!

What are the warning signs that my tires aren't balanced?

You're most likely to notice uneven wear on the tires. Many drivers also notice vibration over 40 mph, especially if the imbalanced tires are on the front.

How often should my tires be balanced?

During typical use, it's a good idea to have your tires rotated and balanced every 4,000 to 6,000 miles. Have them balanced any time a tire is replaced or patched.
